GS-5010 - Language Skills for Research Communication

The FGS will offer the above module for Postgraduate Students from August 2021. The objective of the module will be to strengthen the basic English language skills necessary for postgraduate level education/research in order for students to be able to

  • Effectively carry out their research
  • Take a leading role in the preparation of research papers
  • Produce written outputs of good standard at the end of the degree programme

This will be an interactive module, with a number of hands-on learning activities. The module is offered as a compulsory module to all research degree applicants during their first year of registration and is effective from September 2021. Students must pass this module as a prerequisite of degree requirements. It will be an optional module for existing research students. Existing students who wish to follow this module should enroll via the LMS (using their UoM accounts). They may obtain approval to follow this module.

GS-5011 - Research Communication

The FGS will offer the above module for Postgraduate Students from January 2026. After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Produce organised and coherent paragraphs with topic sentences, main ideas, supporting details, andconcluding sentences through a process of drafting and revision
  • Express ideas coherently in multi-paragraph academic essay assignments with an introductory paragraph,body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph through a process of drafting and revision
  • Write multi-paragraph expository, analytical, evaluative, objective, persuasive, or argumentative essays
  • Apply reading strategies in order to synthesise, record, and report the main ideas from an academic text
  • Abstract the main ideas, main supporting ideas and write a summary

GS-5020 - Introduction to Research

The FGS will offer the above Short Course starting from March 2020. Resource persons will be academic staff of the University of Moratuwa, drawn from across Faculties, who are eminent and experienced researchers as well as younger academics who have had formal training in Research Methodology.

This will be an interactive course module, with a number of hands-on learning activities. It is ideally suited for those currently conducting research or interested in engaging in postgraduate studies or a research related career in the future.

Those who complete the Short Course successfully will get a Certificate as per the university rules and regulations. In addition, they are able to claim credit for GS 5020 if they register for a postgraduate degree program at the University of Moratuwa within 3 years of completing the Short Course.

GS-5030 - Advanced Research Methodology

The FGS will offer the above module for Postgraduate Students from January 2026. After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Identify and apply different research strategies
  • Apply qualitative and quantitative data collection methods
  • Apply relevant statistical or qualitative analysis techniques
  • Apply data analysis software
  • Demonstrate data visualization methods for effective presentation of the research ideas and findings

GS-5040 - Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Management

The FGS will offer the above module for Postgraduate Students from January 2026. After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Understand the foundational principles of Intellectual Property (IP) and identify suitable IP protection/s for a particular research and innovation
  • Effectively utilize patent databases as key resources for literature reviews and refine research topics through prior art searches
  • Develop the main sections of a patent draft, including well-structured claims
  • Understand the principles of IP valuation and explore its relevance in assessing the commercial potential of their research
  • Gain insights into IP management strategies, including licensing and commercialization pathways
  • Explore the connection between Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and business/marketing strategies
  • Apply various IP filing routes, international protections, and key legal agreements associated with IP rights and commercialization
